Taos Box Full Day

The best whitewater rafting in New Mexico! Our full-day trip rafting the world-famous Taos Box is the ultimate whitewater adventure, with 17 miles of intense, challenging rapids crashing through the most awe-inspiring part of the Rio Grande Gorge.

Many days on the Taos Box sell out early. Book as soon as possible!

The Taos Box is a remote chasm of rugged basalt cliffs plunging 800 feet down to the Rio Grande. This spectacular wilderness was declared by Congress one of the nation's first Wild & Scenic Rivers. Populated by bighorn sheep, river otters, elk, beavers, and mountain lions, it's alive with the cries of ravens, falcons, and eagles. And the echoing roar of world-class whitewater.

With 60 rapids, of which 13 are rated Class 3 and above, the Taos Box is the ultimate whitewater thrill. You don't need to be a top athlete or even have previous whitewater rafting experience – but you do need to be in good physical condition and have a good sense of adventure. This is not a trip for small children or the faint of heart!

Mystery Tour

We need a minimum stream flow in order to raft the big rapids of the Taos Box. Because the water level is unpredictable -- it depends on snowpack, weather, and the irrigation practices of farmers upstream -- and can change at very short notice, it is our policy to book all trips through the Taos Box as a Mystery Tour. That means we reserve the boat and guide for our party, and if the Box is runnable and suitable for your party, that's where we'll go. If not, you choose one of our other full day rafting adventures.

WHITEWATER RATING: Class 4 plus

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM AGE: 12 (14 in high water, 16 in super-high water)

MEET: 8:45 a.m., Los Rios Boat House, 4003 State Hwy. 68. "We've been rafting with Los Rios for over 25 years. Hi! I have just returned home to Florida from two-weeks in New Mexico. The first week was spent visiting my parents in Taos, NM. While there, my family and I took two rafting trips with Los Rios. I would like to thank our spectacular rafting guides, Brian and Adam. The first trip was the Taos Box. Myself (40) and my 71-year old father, 43 year-old brother, and 12-year old daughter were participants and Brian was our fearless leader. First of all, Los Rios called us the day before to verify that our 12-year old would still like to join despite the low water and rougher conditions, which was a very responsible and thoughtful thing to do. Ironically, I turned out to be the member of our group to fall out of the raft! Brian was fantastic during the quick rescue and afterwards, as well. In fact, except for that one incident, the trip was absolutely perfect. He guided the raft expertly -- and it was an exciting day on the river (to say the least). Special thanks to Miguel, as well, for his entertaining stories and the delicious lunch. Our second trip was the 1/2-day Racecourse, guided by Adam. My husband and I, our two daughters (12 and 10), and two others were assigned to his raft. Adam was such a fun rafting guide! He has a lot of great knowledge about the river (and despite the fact that we've done the Racecourse for many years, he mentioned things we didn't know) and a really fun personality. He also proved to be a skilled guide and quick to assist when necessary. Los Rios, thank you so much for helping to make our summer vacation an awesome one! And, Brian and Adam -- thanks for taking such great care of us!"
