WhiteWater School 2023

2023 Guide School

Our Whitewater School has been in operation for over 30 years. 100% of graduates from this program who seek employment as whitewater guides have been hired by either Los Rios or other rafting companies.

The school is designed to give you a basic working knowledge of how to read and run whitewater rapids up to class 3. Class 4+ training is also available by special arrangement. You will receive classroom training in;

Basic knowledge, history and theory of whitewater rafting.

Safety practices

Basic care of boats and equipment

Hands-on training running the most popular section of the Rio Grande, known as the Racecourse, along with other scenic sections

Students will take turns guiding, depending on their ability and their learning curve. Federal regulations require a new guide to have at least 21 trips down the Racecourse before they can be hired. If you have experience at guiding that is documented; as few as 3 trips may be required by BLM. If you have this documented experience the required time in our school can be reduced. In the eleven days of the course (does include Rio Chama) there will be a combination of on river and off river programs. It is estimated that during the class you will get at least 15-20 runs down the Racecourse. You are required to participate in cleaning, inventory, labeling, storage, packing, preparation and general care of all equipment, structures, vehicles and grounds. In the class you will make connections to facilitate the completion of your 21 required trips, as well as additional practice runs. It is also possible once your name is in our system, that you will be invited, before Whitewater School starts, on training trips that the more experienced guides need to qualify for the new season—these would also count toward your 21. Before and after course additional training will be offered to qualified students to facilitate their employment.
